This course examines a wide variety of U.S. consumer protection laws and briefly introduces consumer law in the EU and other jurisdictions. The course looks at UDAP (unfair and deceptive acts and practices) laws that provide the primary authority for public enforcement agencies. The course surveys U.S. consumer financial protection laws, including the Truth in Lending Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The course also examines tools available to legislators in constructing laws that regulate unfair market conduct resulting from an imbalance of power between sellers (or other market participants) and consumers.
