Kara oversees the LL.M., Pre-LL.M., S.J.D., Visiting Scholar, and JD Exchange programs at Minnesota Law, as well as all faculty exchanges and partnerships with institutions overseas. With a strong emphasis on the international student experience, Kara's counseling/advising and advocacy background is the foundation for her work.
A native Minnesotan, Kara earned her BA in Communication Studies at Gustavus Adolphus College, and her MA in Counseling and Student Personnel Psychology from the University of Minnesota. She studied abroad in Costa Rica, Ireland and Spain, and worked in Japan prior to beginning her career in higher education student affairs more than 15 years ago. Outside of her work life, Kara is the mother of four children and two cats.
Hannah has worked in various positions at the University since 2015. Her current role involves administering the LL.M., Pre-LL.M., S.J.D., Visiting Scholar, and JD Exchange programs at Minnesota Law, as well as all faculty exchanges and partnerships with institutions overseas.
Hannah spent a semester studying at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso in Chile, and lived in Spain for a year after earning a BA in Communication Studies and International Journalism from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. She completed her MA in International Education from the University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development in December 2018. Hannah’s favorite hobbies are reading and eating chocolate, simultaneously or separately.
Karen has been teaching the Legal Writing and Legal Skills courses in the LL.M. program at the University of Minnesota Law School since 2011. She teaches other courses at the law school such as the LEAD program, Judicial Observation, and International Employment Law; supervises the Pro Bono Program for the LL.M. students; and provides academic support for both LL.M. and international JD students.
Karen is a licensed attorney in Minnesota and graduated cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law in 2005. Before attending law school, Karen lived in Rome, Italy from 1990 to 2001, where she taught English as a second language, wrote course materials for teaching English, and worked as a free-lance translator. She has also lived and studied abroad in Santiago, Chile and Guanajuato, Mexico, and speaks Italian and Spanish. Her experiences as a student of languages (her undergraduate major was Italian and Latin) and as a foreigner living abroad provide her a unique perspective on the challenges that international LL.M. students face. Karen authored a book, Legal Writing and Legal Skills for Foreign LL.M. Students, which was published in 2017 by West Academic Publishing. In her free time, Karen enjoys reading, practicing yoga and hanging out with her three Chihuahuas.
