Jean Coleman was raised, and still has deep roots, in rural Iowa. She holds a J.D. and Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Iowa. She spent her early career working for land conservation organizations including as Midwest Regional Director for the American Farmland Trust, where she became a national expert on farmland preservation techniques.
Coleman has worked with dozens of counties throughout the northeast and Midwest to incorporate farmland protection into land use plans and zoning ordinances. She now works as a senior managing attorney for the Minnesota Pollution Control agency, focusing on water issues.
