In turbulent times, the rule of law becomes more than a legal concept — it is the glue that holds our democracy together. Across the nation and around the world, institutions, norms, and rights that were once considered inviolate have come under attack. At Minnesota Law, we understand our responsibility not only to prepare students to practice law, but to equip them to safeguard justice itself.
This issue of Minnesota Law magazine explores how our faculty are teaching future lawyers to defend the rule of law with rigor, creativity, and conviction. In classrooms, clinics, and courtrooms, our students learn that law is not static; it is shaped, for good and ill, by advocacy. You’ll also see profiles of three alumni acting on the principles they learned in law school — whether advancing constitutional rights, ensuring government transparency, or protecting democratic processes.
In addition, in these pages, you will learn about some newcomers to Mondale Hall. We welcomed an extraordinary group of new 1Ls in the Class of 2028. Our astonishing 40% increase in applications for this year demonstrates that students, far from cynically disengaging, are eager to get legal training and contribute to societal solutions — and it also yielded the most academically accomplished and diverse cohort in our history. Three exceptional new faculty members joined us as well: Amna A. Akbar, the Benjamin N. Berger Professor of Criminal Law; Associate Professor Samuel J. Merchant; and Associate Professor Vinita R. Singh. Their scholarship and teaching will enrich our curriculum and deepen our students’ understanding of law’s power and purpose.
Finally, this issue honors those whose lives and legacies demonstrate the best of our Minnesota Law community. The Honorable Keith Davison ’49, at the age of 102, reminds us of the enduring influence of a Minnesota Law degree. And we mourn the senseless loss of Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman ’95 and her husband, Mark. Melissa’s leadership, dedication, and unwavering belief in public service represent the kinds of values I hope to see in those enthusiastic 1Ls as they learn and grow over the next three years.
In uncertain times, Minnesota Law remains steadfast in its mission. Together, we will continue to educate the lawyers and leaders our society needs — those who will uphold the rule of law and strengthen the democratic ideals that define us.
