Nadia Anguiano '17 Named Associate Clinical Professor of Law
Nadia Anguiano '17 has been named associate clinical professor of law and director of the Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic beginning this May.
Currently a visiting assistant clinical professor, Anguiano has been serving as as director of Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic on an interim basis. With this appointment, she is now a member of the Law School’s permanent, full-time faculty.
James H. Binger Center Hosts Annual Asylum Conference
On November 18, faculty and staff of Minnesota Law and The Advocates co-sponsored the Fall 2022 Asylum Conference. Over 200 attorneys, paralegals and community members learned how to improve client collaboration and build a case record to withstand appeal. Participants built skills to address systemic and implicit bias when representing trauma survivors, including critical interviewing skills and techniques to effectively work with interpreters. Minnesota Law Students Help Honduran Trans Woman Win Asylum
Students participating in MinnesotaLaw's Immigration and Human Rights Clinic helped their client Rachell, a 27-year-old trans woman from Honduras, get asylum in the United States. Rachell, who escaped from physical and sexual abuse and the threat of gang violence in her native country, now has a permanent home here.
Minnesota Law Students Help Client Avoid Removal from U.S. with Second 6th Circuit Appellate Win
Minnesota Law students have helped win a decisive second victory allowing a man to reunite with family in the United States and potentially sparing others from unlawful repeated removal actions in a key ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
The Sixth Circuit’s opinion in Jasso Arangure v. Garland serves as a significant check on federal prosecutorial power in administrative immigration proceedings, according to clinical professor Nadia Anguiano-Wehde ’17.
Prof. Steve Meili Appointed Director of Law Clinics
Professor Steve Meili has been appointed as the new director of the law clinics for a three-year term, starting this summer.
Meili, the James H. Michael Chair in International Human Rights Law, joined the Law School in 2008, became a tenured associate professor in 2018. He previously held the James H. Binger Professorship in Clinical Law (awarded in 2019).
Minnesota Law Students, Faculty, and Staff Provide Legal Support to Afghan Refugees
Several Minnesota Law students joined faculty and staff from the James H. Binger Center for New Americans to provide legal support to Afghan refugees on the Fort McCoy military base in Wisconsin late last month. The team helped the refugees understand the complex and often challenging U.S. immigration system, prepare their asylum or special immigrant visa applications, and get connected to a nationwide network of lawyers.
The Minnesota Law team aided an estimated 70-95 Afghan guests over three days.

Providing Immigrants Legal Assistance During Covid—Reflections and Lessons Learned
It’s a Thursday afternoon, and students in the Immigration and Human Rights Clinic are getting ready to meet with a client in a Law School conference room from an ongoing asylum case. They have conducted hours of research in preparation for the meeting, and are eager to share updates about the case.
