Prof. Megan Walsh Interviewed by Minnesota Daily About Rapid Rise in School Shootings
Professor Megan Walsh, director of the Gun Violence Prevention Clinic, was interviewed by the Minnesota Daily concerning the rapid rise in gun violence in schools during the last decade. According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, in 2014, there were 47 school shootings compared to 229 in 2024. Prof. Walsh said, “Gun violence has become so commonplace that every teacher in America is thinking about how they are going to protect their children every year that they are in school.” She added that arming teachers will not solve the problem. She said, “Guns are not making us safer. They are making people die, and they do not belong in schools.” Chad Nowlan, a 2024 Law School graduate who participated in the Gun Violence Prevention Clinic, was also quoted in the story about the lack of action by states to enact laws to restrict gun access. He said, “It angers me because it reminds me that there are solutions people are working on that they have put on the table, yet legislatures don‘t act on them.”
