Prof. Kirtley Comments on New AG Guidelines to Associated Press

Professor Jane Kirtley was quoted in an Associated Press report about new Justice Department guidelines governing obtaining records from the news media in leak investigations. She expressed concern that "national security" exceptions to provisions requiring notification of the press before records are obtained from third parties are too vague. "It seems that in times of crisis, there's a tendency to see everything as a major national security breach. Do they all rise to the level of severity to justify what I see as an intrusion on press independence?" Prof. Kirtley said.
