Student News: Kayla Gillespie ’25 Receives Minnesota Women Lawyers 2024 Social Justice Writing Award
Kayla Gillespie ’25 is the recipient of the Minnesota Women Lawyers (MWL) 2024 Social Justice Writing Award. This award will be presented at MWL's 30th Annual Rosalie Wahl Leadership Lecture on November 14th in recognition of her paper “Bostock, the Safe Streets Act, and Protecting LGBTQ People from Discriminatory Policing.”
Minnesota Law alum Amy Cohen ’24 received an honorable mention in recognition of her paper entitled “From Powell to Present: Defining the Right to Counsel Beyond Rothgery.”
Alessandra Wilson: A Scholarship Recipient Dedicated to Serving the Underserved
Meet Alessandra Wilson, a 3L at Minnesota Law, who is deeply passionate about public service. Wilson’s decision to attend law school stemmed from a deep desire to tackle systemic injustices and provide direct legal support to those who need it most. “As a Mexican American, I grew up witnessing the challenges that non-majority communities face when trying to access legal resources,” Wilson shares. “I knew I wanted to be an advocate for those communities, and attending law school felt like the most effective way to make a difference.
Professors Bix, Bodie, Carbone, and Hickman Ranked Among the Top Cited Faculty in the U.S.
Four Minnesota Law faculty members have been ranked among the most highly cited professors in their areas of expertise, according to data from the latest Sisk Report. Brian Bix, Frederick W. Thomas Professor of Law and Philosophy, has been ranked 8th among the top 10 most-cited law and philosophy faculty in the U.S. from 2019-23; Matthew Bodie, Robins Kaplan Professor of Law, has been ranked 6th among the top 10 most-cited labor and employment law faculty in the U.S.
Prof. Alan Rozenshtein Named Nonresident Senior Fellow at Brookings
Professor Alan Rozenshtein has been named a nonresident senior fellow in the Governance Studies program at Brookings. He is also a senior editor and the research director for Lawfare. His scholarship and writing focus on executive power, government surveillance, and technology regulation, in particular digital platforms and artificial intelligence.

The Binger Center Leans into the Labor Movement for its 2024 Fall Immigration Forum
The Binger Center for New Americans held its annual Fall Immigration Forum on Friday, October 11. The daylong event included more than 100 attendees and featured 20 panelists who explored the rights of immigrants to thrive within the U.S. economy. Legal and policy scholars discussed how the immigration system often extracts wealth from immigrant communities rather than creating opportunities for them to build it.

Minnesota Law alum Barbara D’Aquila ‘80 has been awarded the University of Minnesota Alumni Association’s 2024 Alumni Service Award. D’Aquila, a partner at Fisher Phillips, has been a passionate volunteer for the University of Minnesota Law School since her graduation in 1980.
Student News: Haley Van Steenbergh '26 Receives the Minnesota Justice Foundation Outstanding Student Award, Named to AALS 2024 Pro Bono Honor Roll
Haley Van Steenbergh '26 received the Minnesota Justice Foundation's Plunkett Christenson Law Student Volunteer Award at the Minnesota Justice Foundation's annual awards ceremony in early October. This summer, Haley volunteered for HOME Line, a tenant advocacy organization that offers free legal help for renters. During her time with HOME Line, she advised 346 clients on various issues within landlord-tenant law, including rent escrows, discrimination, and evictions.

Adjunct Prof. Clinton E. Cutler, Director of the Bankruptcy Clinic, Receives Minnesota Justice Foundation Award
Adjunct Professor Clinton E. Cutler, director of Minnesota Law's Bankruptcy Clinic, shareholder at Fredrikson & Byron, and member of the firm's bankruptcy group, was honored with the Minnesota Justice Foundation's Private Practice Lawyer Award at a ceremony earlier this month. Cutler joined Fredrikson & Byron in 1984. He represents clients locally and nationwide in bankruptcy and other proceedings.
