Prof. Prentiss Cox ’90 Quoted and Provided Background on CNN Story About Elderly Campaign Donors
Professor Prentiss Cox ’90 was quoted in a CNN investigation story about how deceptive political fundraising has misled elderly Americans into giving away millions of dollars. Analysis done by CNN has shown how deceptive political fundraisers have victimized hundreds of elderly Americans and misled those battling dementia or other cognitive impairments into giving away millions of dollars, far more than they ever intended. While predatory fundraising has been done by both political parties, Republican fundraisers alone have been subject to more than 800 complaints to the Federal Trade Commission since 2022 — nearly seven times more than the number of complaints against the Democratic Party. Prof. Cox said, “The fact there are lots of complaints means this is likely a huge problem. From a consumer protection standpoint, this raises red flag level concerns about consumer misinformation and deception.”
