Prof. Myron Orfield Testimony Quoted in the Star Tribune About Housing Funding Not Being Allocated Appropriately
Professor Myron Orfield, Earl R. Larson Professor of Civil Right and Civil Liberties Law, and director, Institute on Metropolitan Opportunity, testified before the Minnesota Advisory Committee of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission about a housing finance agency that has not encouraged nor allocated subsidized housing appropriately —because of that, racial segregation is worsening. Prof. Orfield, along with the Rev. Alfred Babington-Johnson of the Stairstep Foundation, testified that the share of Minnesota Housing funding going to Twin Cities suburbs is 41% over the last five years, though the suburbs are 75% of the metro area. The cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul have 60% of the units even though they have 25% of the population.
