Kelly Lyn Mitchell, executive director of the Robina Institute of Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, was interviewed on Dan Abrams Live about Kim Potter’s upcoming sentencing in Minnesota. The former Brooklyn Center police officer was convicted of first-degree and second-degree manslaughter after fatally shooting Daunte Wright during a traffic stop. Minnesota statutes require that she be sentenced only on the most serious charge of first-degree manslaughter, which carries a sentence of up to 15 years. 

Professor Oren Gross Appointed Associate Dean of Academic Affairs 

Professor Oren Gross has been appointed Minnesota Law’s next associate dean of academic affairs, starting this summer.

Gross, the Irving Younger Professor of Law, is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of international law and national security law. He is also an expert on the Middle East and the Arab-Israeli conflict.

In her role as Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, Prof. Fionnuala Ní Aoláin was recently interviewed by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) about children held in prison in Syria.  As a representative of the U.N., Ní Aoláin suggests that Norway's failure to bring home the four children referenced in the video robs Norway of its credibility as a global leader in human rights.

Minnesota Law Mourns the Passing of Prof. Yale Kamisar, Highly Regarded Criminal Law Scholar Who Once Served on Law School Faculty

Professor Yale Kamisar, a highly regarded legal scholar and author who served on Minnesota Law’s faculty from 1957-64, passed away on Jan. 30 at the age of 92.

Kamisar, who went on to spend nearly 40 years as a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, was a nationally recognized authority on constitutional law and criminal procedure. He was known as the “father of Miranda” because of an influential article he wrote that was cited by the U.S. Supreme Court in its landmark decision in Miranda v. Arizona.

Minnesota Law Mourns the Passing of Joseph O’Neill '56, Former Legislator, Lifelong Community-Spirited Citizen

Joseph T. O’Neill '56, a St. Paul attorney, legislator, and community leader and advocate, died on Jan. 24 at the age of 91.

O’Neill served as legal counsel in U.S. Air Force from 1956–59 in the Azores and served in the reserves after that until 1972. He practiced law in St. Paul for more than 50 years, including at O'Neill, Grills & O'Neill with his son and law partner, Michael. He served as an adjunct professor at Minnesota Law from 2004-13.
