Minnesota Law to Launch Racial Justice Law Clinic  

 A new legal clinic at Minnesota Law aims to target deeply embedded, systemic racial inequalities and discrimination while training future lawyers to make an impact on this critical work.  

The Racial Justice Law Clinic will launch in fall 2022, serving as an avenue for Minnesota Law students and faculty to tackle discriminatory practices and fight for individuals and communities facing race-based oppression.

The Constitutionalization of Human Rights Law and its Impact on Asylum-Seekers

The constitutionalization of human rights law is on the rise throughout the world. With increasing frequency, countries have either adopted specific human rights provisions or incorporated entire human rights treaties into their national constitutions. While this phenomenon has received much scholarly attention in the abstract, we know virtually nothing about how it affects asylum-seekers in particular.

Over two days, March 3 and March 8, 2022, the Minnesota House Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Finance and Policy Committee held informational hearings on a bill spearheaded by the Law School's Clemency Project, sponsored by Representative Athena Hollins, and supported by a diverse coalition of non-profit organizations and individuals.  The bill, entitled "Survivors Justice Act," encourages sentencing leniency for those defendants whose crimes were committed as a result of domestic abuse, sexual assault or sex trafficking.  It also includes a novel "second look" provision

Minnesota Law Mourns the Passing of Thomas Ray King '65

Thomas Ray King ‘65 died on Feb. 18 at the age of 82.

As an undergraduate at the university of Minnesota, King was a halfback for the Gopher football teams which won both a National Championship and the Rose Bowl.

After graduating from the Law School, King became a recognized securities and finance lawyer. He was known to guide and mentor lawyers, friends, and clients. He spent much of his career at Fredrikson and Byron, where he became chair of the board.

Professor JaneAnne Murray was awarded the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) Champion of Justice Legal Award on February 26 during the Association’s Midwinter Meeting in Austin, Texas.

Champion of Justice Awards are bestowed upon those individuals who—through legislative, journalistic, philanthropic, or humanitarian pursuits—have staunchly preserved or defended the constitutional rights of American citizens and have endeavored to ensure justice and due process for persons accused of crime.

The Law School’s Immigration and Human Rights Clinic recently helped a Guinean woman who faced persecution in her native country because of her religious beliefs, women’s rights advocacy, and public health work win asylum in the United States.

Prof. Steve Meili Appointed Director of Law Clinics


Professor Steve Meili has been appointed as the new director of the law clinics for a three-year term, starting this summer.

Meili, the James H. Michael Chair in International Human Rights Law, joined the Law School in 2008, became a tenured associate professor in 2018. He previously held the James H. Binger Professorship in Clinical Law (awarded in 2019).
