Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a top priority at the University of Minnesota Law School. We offer one of the nation’s largest and most distinguished clinical education programs, a unique first-year Law in Practice course, abundant corporate externships, capstone courses focused on solving real-world problems, extensive legal practice skills courses, and your choice of 11 concentrations.

Hours of pro bono legal service provided annually by our students
Students worked on a policy paper on the right to remedy for Amnesty International in a case heard at the Supreme Court of the United States.
Our Law in Practice course is unique in providing students with hands-on legal skills in their first year.
Journal editors and other students are often given opportunities to meet legal dignitaries such as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
3Ls Paul Dimick, Kayla Hoel, and Zachary Hofeld successfully prepped and argued an immigration case before the Sixth Circuit. The court issued an 18-page decision in their client's favor.
Environmental Law Students
With easy access to the state capitol, capstone courses such as Legislative Process tap into first-hand experiences for students.
Our students often advance to national and international mock trial competitions.
With state and federal courts near campus, students have the opportunity to hear personal accounts of legal careers or take courses taught by judges.
Student organizations bring in legal experts and judges to hear real world accounts of the legal practice.
The Law Library, with more than one million volumes and volume-equivalents, is one of the premier legal research facilities in the United States.
At least once a year, students are able to observe Minnesota Supreme Court proceedings held at the Law School.

Students have two courtrooms available for moot court and other classes that enhance their practical skills.
