Professors Dan Schwarcz and Tom Cotter Interviewed by Minnesota Lawyer on Chat GPT Taking a Law Exam
Professor Dan Schwarcz and Tom Cotter were interviewed by the Minnesota Lawyer on the recent paper published by four Minnesota Law professors covering whether or not the popular AI bot, Chat GPT, could successfully complete a law exam. Chat GPT managed to pass the exam, with Professor Schwarcz commenting on its abilities, stating “It’s not at the top or middle, but it is holding its own in terms of being able to produce reasonable answers to very difficult questions.”
With the knowledge that Chat GPT can produce satisfying answers, another interesting question emerges: who do those answers belong to? Professor Tom Cotter, an expert in intellectual property law elaborated, “Is it possible for the creator of the program or the user of the program to claim ownership?” Cotter asked. “Again, we will have to see how that issue will resolve itself over time.”
