Prof. Befort Quoted in MPR Article on Coach Kill's Status Under ADA
Professor Stephen Befort was quoted in a Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) article on University of Minnesota head football coach Jerry Kill's seizures presenting a possible dilemma for the University. Befort said that Coach Kill is an individual with a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) who may not be discharged because of his disability so long as he can perform the essential functions of the job. Befort noted that Coach Kill and the University have a written contract providing that Coach Kill may be terminated only for "just cause" or a sizeable monetary buyout. Befort said that the expense of a big contract buyout "might provide Coach Kill more protection than [the disabilities act] does."
