The U.S. asylum process thrives on identifying victims of persecution who are seeking a safe haven in the U.S.  The dehumanizing experience of seeking asylum is often compounded for those seeking asylum because of their queer identity.  Experienced attorneys who have represented LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and clients will share their personal experiences with the asylum process.

LGBTQ+ individuals seeking asylum face unique challenges, both in immigration courts and with asylum offices. Panelists will highlight the historical prejudices embedded in the asylum system, including the skepticism often directed towards asylum seekers’ queer identity, harmful practices of revictimizing interrogation techniques and the minimization of psychological trauma that many queer asylum seekers experience.

Speakers will also discuss how attorneys can leverage their professional privilege to empower clients, and support efforts to reclaim their agency.
