Legal Scholarship for Equal Justice

Students from all three Minnesota law schools will present the results of their research and scholarship on current Equal Justice hot topics. From all the topics practitioners and professors submitted to the Minnesota Justice Foundation, law students chose five topics, researched and worked on them for an entire semester, and prepared presentations and original scholarship. This seminar offers you the chance to learn what they learned about issues of current importance to equal justice.

Developments in Immigration Law: Crimmigration and Asylum

The Center for New Americans will host a full-day immigration law conference titled Developments in Immigration Law: Crimmigration and Asylum on April 1, 2016 at the University of Minnesota Law School. Continuing legal education courses will be led by faculty and students from the Center’s clinics. The event offers lunch and five CLE credits will be requested.

Law School Team Wins Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law Competition

A team of three students from the Law School has won the 2016 Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law Competition, which is conducted by the American Red Cross. Team members Anne Dutton, Griffin Ferry, and Dane Rockow, all 3Ls, traveled to Seattle for the competition, defeating the team from Harvard Law School in the final round. Rockow and Dutton placed first and second, respectively, in the Best Oralist category.

The Vanishing Day in Court: Procedural Reform and Access to Justice

Renowned civil procedure scholar and former U of MN Law professor Arthur R. Miller will be joined by three distinguished panelists to discuss and address judicial decisions that have given judges broader discretion to resolve cases prior to trial and screen cases out of court (e.g., dismiss on the pleadings, dismiss on jurisdictional grounds, require arbitration, etc.). Mock Trial and Moot Court Teams Hit the Road for Competitions

Mock trial and moot court teams from the Law School were extremely busy in late February, traveling near and far for national competitions.

• Two mock trial teams from the Law School spent three days participating at the regional level of the annual Texas Young Lawyers Association National Trial Competition. Both performed well, finishing 5th and 10th overall out of 24 teams.
