Prof. Kirtley Quoted in Pioneer Press Editorial on Data Breach

Professor Jane Kirtley's observations on the biggest data privacy breach to date involving alleged unauthorized access by police officers to Minnesota's driver's license database were featured in the lead editorial in the Pioneer Press. Kirtley pointed out that digitization of government records presents both an opportunity for increased public access and greater risks for data security. But she added that public employees viewing personal data without authorization raises the issue "of public servants who are supposed to be protecting public safety flouting the rules," and that "anybody with access to government databases should be trained about restrictions under federal or state law," though "This doesn't seem to me to be something that would require much beyond common sense."
