Prof. June Carbone was quoted by the Star Tribune in an article, In custody battles, system can be manipulated, slain boy's case shows, regarding a judge's decision to grant a mother custody of her son, in spite of mental health concerns. Prof. Carbone was quoted saying, "I am appalled at the judge giving the mother sole custody of the child in light of the mental health issues and what appears to be a record that shows she was a potential threat to the child."

Minnesota Law Partners with Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid for Community Fellowships

The Community Legal Fellows Initiative, funded by The Minneapolis Foundation, provides much-needed legal support for low-income persons in North Minneapolis and the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. Through a community partnership model with a civil legal aid organization and community health clinics, the initiative supports Minnesota Law graduates working with Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid to expand service capacity to clients in need while simultaneously training new public service lawyers in Minnesota.

Prof. Kristin Hickman was quoted by Bloomberg Law in an article, How Biden Has Made Policy With Short-Term, Costly Rules, regarding the Biden administration's reliance on "short-term" temporary regulations to achieve its policy goals absent congressional action, and conclusions by courts that at least some of those regulations exceeded statutory authority. Prof. Hickman was quoted as observing that President Biden was under tremendous pressure "to adopt rules and regulations to do what Congress can't or won't."

Prof. Fionnuala Ní Aoláin has written an article in Foreign Affairs on "The Child Victims of ISIS: Repatriating the Residents of Syria’s Detention Camps." She describes the dire situation that children are facing in these detention camps, while urging countries with citizens in the camps to act. "[C]ountries will need to make a massive humanitarian investment," she writes, "to provide the basic semblance of a dignified life to children in these camps."

A May 26, 2022 article in Yahoo! Finance titled Baby formula shortage raises the question of whether 'Big Formula' should be broken up discusses a recent congressional hearing concerning the shortage of infant formula.  The article quotes Professor Thomas Cotter as stating that, while "in theory . . . competition regulators could seek to divest Abbott of its dominant position," it is unlikely that Abbott or the other U.S.

Minnesota Law Celebrates Its 134th Commencement 

The Law School held its 134th commencement on Saturday, May 14 at Northrop auditorium, the first time the ceremony has returned to its traditional venue as an in-person event in three years.

The 2021 and 2020 commencements were held as virtual and live-stream events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professors Meili and Dewey Receive Promotions

Steve Meili has been elevated to rank of full professor and faculty research librarian Scott Dewey has received promotion and continuous appointment as associate librarian. 

The two academic promotions, newly approved by the Board of Regents, are effective in August.
