Prof. JaneAnne Murray and Sam Buisman ’25 Gain Clemency for Clinic Client in New York
Minnesota Law’s Clemency Project Clinic, directed by Professor JaneAnne Murray, announced the successful resolution of a clemency case it took on in 2017. N.V. was a candidate in the New York State Clemency Project, run by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and Families Against Mandatory Minimums (FAMM). Murray was a member on the steering committee for the project and the Clemency Project Clinic took on eight applicants from this program, including N.V.

A new groundbreaking symposium of nine articles focused on the expanding deployment of highly portable MRI (pMRI) technology for brain research outside the hospital is the culmination of five years of research and provides needed ethical, legal, and societal implications (ELSI) guidelines necessary to ensure participant safety and community trust.

Can you share a bit about your background? Where you’re from, where did you go to undergrad, and where did you work over the summer or where will you work this summer?
I’m from Minnetonka, a western suburb of Minneapolis, and I went to Hopkins schools. I attended the University of Minnesota for undergrad, so I’m a double gopher. This past summer, I worked as a research assistant for Professor Jane Kirtley and as an intern at the Workers Compensation Court of Appeals with Judge Kathryn Carlson.
Minnesota Law Moot Court Team Advances to Quarterfinals, Wins 3rd Best Brief
In late January, Minnesota Law participated in the Hicks Thomas, LLP Moot Court National Championship held at the University of Houston Law Center. The team advanced to the quarterfinals, finishing in the Top 8, and also earned the award for the 3rd best brief. The Honorable James Graves Jr. of the 5th Circuit presented the team with the award for the 3rd best brief.
Consumer Protection Clinic Helps Low-Income Seniors Gain a Settlement for Excessive Rent Charges
Low-income seniors who were charged excessive rents will receive more than $166,000 in refunds under a class-action settlement reached after Minnesota Law’s Consumer Protection Clinic achieved a significant win at the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Last month, the Minnesota Board of Pardons, which includes Governor Tim Walz, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison '90, and Chief Justice Natalie Hudson '82, voted unanimously to grant a pardon to JJ, a client of the Law School’s Clemency Project Clinic, directed by Professor JaneAnne Murray.
