5 Tips for Applying to Law School

Applying to law school can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are five tips on how to apply to law school and make your application as competitive as possible:

  1. Study and register for the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). We encourage students to study for at least three months before taking it.
  2. Consult with a trusted mentor or prelaw advisor about your personal statement. Minnesota Law does not conduct interviews during the application process, so treat the personal statement like an interview on paper: Who are you? Why do you want to go to law school? What experiences have you had that will benefit the Minnesota Law or greater legal community?
  3. Ask professors, supervisors, or colleagues to write positive and comprehensive letters of recommendation. Minnesota Law requires one recommendation and will accept two.
    • Request your letters well before you plan to submit your application. More often that not, letters of recommendation are what hold up an application from being complete.
  4. Request your undergraduate (and/or graduate) transcript to be sent to LSAC.
    • If you are concerned about your GPA or college grade trends, you may submit a brief addendum with your application.
  5. Update your resume and provide any supplemental materials (addenda, diversity statement, Why Minnesota Law statement). Please keep your resume to one or two pages.
    • Keep in mind the Admissions Committee is looking for work experience, leadership, community engagment, volunteer activities, honors, awards, and hobbies.
