Prof. Murray's Clemency Project Featured in Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone profiled one of the clients represented by Professor JaneAnne Murray and the students in her Clemency Project at the Law School.

Douglas Tignor is serving the 12th year of a 188-month sentence in a federal prison camp. His sentence was imposed upon his conviction for passive possession of a firearm in connection with his role in selling small quantities of prescription drugs. Professor Murray is quoted as saying Mr. Tignor's only asset at the time of his arrest was a car worth $500. He had $4,000 in medical debts. At his sentencing, Tignor was classified as an "armed career criminal," due to a past conviction for street-level cocaine distribution, which triggered a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison. Murray tells Rolling Stone that under today's "more enlightened" federal charging and sentencing policies, his sentence would be much shorter.
