Prof. Meili Presents Research on Colombian Refugees at Latin American Studies Association Conference
Professor Stephen Meili presented his research on Colombian refugees seeking asylum in Ecuador at the Latin American Studies Association annual Congress in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He had also presented this research earlier in May at the Nordic Asylum Law Conference in Uppsala, Sweden. Meili's research focuses on how the constitutionalization of human rights norms in Ecuador has created the opportunity for lawyers and courts to counteract government policies that restricted the ability of Colombians fleeing the armed conflict in their home country to seek and obtain asylum in Ecuador. This project builds on Meili's previous scholarship on the effectiveness of human rights treaties in the asylum context, as well as the work of cause lawyers.
