Policing Everyman: How Cars Transformed American Freedom tells the story of how the mass adoption of cars transformed policing and, in the process, the idea of freedom itself. The first chapter begins by examining the role of traffic—which police chiefs throughout the country identified as the biggest police problem of their generation—in the transition from nineteenth-century self-regulation to twentieth-century policing as the predominant mode of governing American society.

Prof. Blumenthal Wins Second Major Book Award

Cheiron: The International Society for the History of Behavioral and Social Sciences has awarded its 2017 Cheiron Book Prize to Professor Susanna Blumenthal for Law and the Modern Mind: Consciousness and Responsibility in American Legal Culture (Harvard University Press, 2016). Since 2004, Cheiron has given the prize biennially for an outstanding monograph in the history of the social/behavioral/human sciences.

Reversing Mass Punishment in America

While the United States is the undisputed leader of incarceration rates worldwide, little attention has been paid to other forms of punishment in which America has become a leader including community supervision, revocations from supervision to prison, economic penalties, and collateral consequences of conviction. As an example, the Robina Institute’s comparative research of probation rates between American states and European countries finds that, on average, U.S. probation rates are as much as five times higher than that of Europe.

Orientation is carefully planned to provide students with the critical information needed to get a good start in law school and participation is mandatory. Orientation is scheduled for all day August 28-31, 2017. In early August, Student Services will provide students with final orientation details via the Admitted Student Website.

Law School Honors Class of 2017 at 129th Commencement Exercises

The University of Minnesota Law School held its 129th commencement ceremony May 13 at Northrop Memorial Auditorium. Dean Garry Jenkins welcomed the J.D., LL.M.​,​ and M.S.P.L. class​es, their families and friends, and several special guests: Cathy Haukedahl (’79), executive director of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, David McMillan (’87), a member of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents and executive vice president at Minnesota Power, and University Executive Vice President and Provost Karen Hanson.

Law School Commencement 2017

Professor Kristin Hickman has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel by the College’s Board of Regents. Membership in the College is limited to a maximum of 700 tax attorneys across the United States nominated by their peers and recognized for their extraordinary accomplishments and professional achievements and for their dedication to improving the practice of tax law.

Prof. Casper Sanchez (’97) Wins AILA Excellence in Teaching Award

The American Immigration Lawyers Association has named Professor Benjamin Casper Sanchez (’97) the winner of its 2017 Elmer Fried Excellence in Teaching Award. Casper Sanchez is the director of the Law School’s James H. Binger Center for New Americans and the professor of the Center’s Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic. The Elmer Fried Award, established in 1997, is one of the most prestigious in the field of immigration law. The AILA will present the award to Casper Sanchez on June 24 at its annual conference in New Orleans.

Class of 2017 Students Honored at Awards Ceremony

The Law School welcomed graduates and their families for the 2017 Student Awards and Recognition Ceremony, held at 2 p.m. on May 12 in Lockhart Hall. The event acknowledged outstanding student achievement among those in the Class of 2017, prior to the May 13 commencement.

Professor Prentiss Cox was quoted in a Star Tribune article about referral practices in the real estate industry. The article was part of multiple Star Tribune articles about the practice of real estate brokers referring clients to affiliated title and closing companies, or such companies that provided the broker benefits. Cox noted that this practice raises issues about the broker’s fiduciary duties. He stated that consumer lack of understanding about the ability to shop for real estate title and closing services is a major market problem.
