Deepinder Mayell Quoted in Star Tribune about Sanctuary Churches

The Center for New Americans Education and Outreach Director, Deepinder Mayell, was interviewed by the Star Tribune about 30 Minnesota churches that vowed to shelter immigrants facing deportation or to support other churches that do. Mayell was asked about a church's authority to stop immigration officials from conducting searches and arrests on church property. Mayell described that immigration officials were still required to obtain a search warrant signed by a judge to execute a search and highlighted a 2011 memo that advised agents to use special caution in “sensitive locations” such as churches and requires them to secure approval from top officials before conducting enforcement activities in such locations. Mayell also discussed the growing sanctuary movement in cites and on campuses and stated, “We are all figuring out what sanctuary will mean in this new kind of environment.”
