Interlibrary Lending & Copy Requests

Requests From Other Libraries for Items in the Law Library's Collection

Retrieval Service for Law Libraries

The Law Library provides a retrieval service for all Minnesota Law Libraries, including firm, court, academic, and government law libraries. We will pull requested items from our collection and place them on our hold shelf at the Circulation Desk free of charge. This service is a retrieval service only, however, and the items are not sent to you. If you would like materials sent to you, please place your requests through Interlibrary Loan. To request an item through our retrieval service, please email x-asap@umn.edu.

Interlibrary Loan Requests

The Law Library accepts lending and copy requests from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). We will loan circulating Law Library materials to libraries within the United States for six weeks. We do not loan items internationally except by email or fax.

Non-circulating items include reference materials, items on reserve, primary source materials (case reporters, codes/statutes, session laws), rare books, microform, and audio-visual materials.

You can search for items in our collection using the Advance Search template in the University Libraries' catalog. Select the Law Library under "Search Scope" to limit your search to the Law Library.

To submit an ILL request, please use OCLC (our code is MLL).

PLEASE NOTE: We no longer accept ILL requests via email or over the phone.

Charges:

We have reciprocal lending agreements with Minitex, the Chicago Legal Academic System (CLAS) institutions, the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) institutions, and the University of Wisconsin Madison Law Library. For all other libraries, we charge $19.00 per request. We can deduct charges via IFM.

Shipping:

Items loaned to Minitex and BTAA libraries are sent through Minitex. All other loans are sent via USPS. We can ship items overnight via FedEx if you provide us with your FedEx number. Photocopies can be sent through email as a .pdf attachment, fax, or USPS.

Please note the following Copyright restrictions:

NOTICE: WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship or research." If a user makes a request for or later uses a photocopy in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the copyright law.

If you have questions about Interlibrary Loan, please contact the ILL Department at 612-625-9534 or send an email to x-asap@umn.edu.
