Professor George Sheets is an Associate Professor of Classics in the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota.
Professor Sheets received his A.B. with honors in Latin in 1970 from the University of North Carolina and his Ph.D. in Classical Studies from Duke University in 1974. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from William Mitchell College of Law in 1990. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in Classics from The American Academy in Rome in 1984–85 and the Excellence in College Teaching Award from the Classical Association of the Middle West and South in 2001.
Professor Sheets specializes in historical linguistics, Latin literature, and legal history (particularly Roman law and its legacy in the civil and common law traditions). He has published a commentary on the Greek historian, Herodotus, articles and book chapters on Greek dialectology and linguistics, various Latin authors, concepts of public international law in Thucydides, and Roman statutory language. In 2012 he published Casebook on Roman Property Law (Oxford 2012), which is a translation with supplements of Casebook zum römischen Sachenrecht, 10th ed., by H. Hausmaninger and R. Gamauf (MANZ, Wien, 2003). To accompany the translation he has created a web site of comparative problems and materials entitled Common Law Comparisons with Roman Property Law.
