Emily Haeg Nguyen is the Communications and Program Manager at the Human Rights Center. She works with faculty, staff, students, and partners to further the HRC’s communications strategy. In addition, she coordinates events and programming, including the student fellowship program.

Before joining the University of Minnesota, Emily spent two years working for People Serving People, Minnesota’s largest shelter for families experiencing homelessness. She managed the organization’s external communications and supported development efforts, first as the Communications and Grants Associate, and later as the Communications Coordinator. Her work focused on highlighting the voices of Minnesotans experiencing homelessness and driving the narrative around the way in which systems contribute to the occurrence of homelessness.

Emily also served as an AmeriCorps member for Iowa Legal Aid, supporting the organization’s mission to provide free legal services to low income Iowans. After completing a 30-hour training with Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Emily worked as a certified Victim Councelor, directly serving Iowa Legal Aid clients seeking assistance under the Violence Against Women Act. During her service, Emily also organized various community events focused on increasing community access to legal services.

In 2015, Emily graduated cum laude from St. Cloud State University, earning a Bachelors of Science in mass communications with an emphasis in journalism.
