Prof. Jeff Kosseff Interviewed by KARE News About Possible Social Media Lawsuit Due to Minneapolis School Shooting

Professor Jeff Kosseff, Silha Professor of Media Ethics and Law, was interviewed by KARE News about a possible lawsuit by the attorneys of an Annunciation School shooting victim’s family against YouTube. The attorneys for the family of Harper Moyski contend that the media platform could have prevented the tragedy. They said the shooter made multiple videos that promoted “extremely violent ideologies” that glorified racism, antisemitism, and firearms that were scheduled ahead of time to go public the day of the shooting. The videos also included a violent manifesto and an apparent diagram of Annunciation Church. Prof. Kosseff said suing online platforms is “a steep uphill climb.” He added, “If I were to go onto social media and post something defamatory about you, you could sue me but you can't sue the platform where I posted it.”
