Prof. Fionnuala Ní Aoláin Contributes 9/11 Anniversary Reflection in Just Security
Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin contributed a reflection on the anniversary of 9/11 for Just Security. She wrote, “On September 11th, 2001, I was in the maternity unit of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. I had just given birth to my first child six days before. Medical complications kept us both in the hospital, so it was early afternoon in Belfast when grainy news images filtered through the old square television screen in my hospital room from New York. ... In those early grey days in Belfast, I could not have imagined that the next two decades of my own scholarly and personal life would intertwine with the lives of those most harmed by the events of the 9/11 attacks. Years of work defending the rights of victims of violence in Ireland, including victims of terrorism, would later lead me as U.N. Special Rapporteur to demand that the United States government live up to its promises of long-term repair, remedy and support to the families of those killed and injured on 9/11.” Read her entire reflection.
