Prof. Amy Sweasy Interviewed by KARE News About Minneapolis Shooter and Lack of Charges From Earlier Incidents
Professor Amy Sweasy was interviewed by KARE News about the mass shooting in downtown Minneapolis this week. The shooter, Carlton Johnson, had made multiple violent threats towards fellow apartment tenants and his girlfriend. After another verbal threat earlier this summer, Johnson was not charged because the lack of evidence that his gun, that he had a permit to carry, had not be removed from his waistband. Prof. Sweasy said, “This person was an authorized legal gun owner who had a permit for the gun. The law really doesn’t prohibit then showing it in the absence of some other context. ... The justice system though looks at one incident at a time. So each one of those incidents has to stand on its own in order to start the process of going through the criminal justice systems.
