Prof. Linus Chan Interviewed by Star Tribune About Third-Country Deportation Practices to Scare Immigrants Into Dropping Asylum Cases

Professor Linus Chan was interviewed by the Minnesota Star Tribune about the Trump administration increasingly deporting immigrants seeking asylum to third countries that have cooperation agreements with the U.S. Amid ongoing court challenges, critics have called the practice inhumane. Opponents of the practice say third-country removals allow immigrants to be sent to countries that are potentially just as dangerous as the places they fled, and they could risk indefinite detention or being returned to their country of origin. Prof. Chan said, “It is designed as a tool to terrorize people. We’re sending them to countries with bad economies, dangerous places. There are many countries that welcome new immigrants. We’re not sending them there.”
