Gun Violence Prevention Clinic Fellow Christian Purnell Interviewed by Rochester Post Bulletin About Lack of Legislative Action Regarding Firearms Restrictions
Minnesota Law Gun Violence Prevention Clinic Fellow Christian Purnell was interviewed by the Rochester Post Bulletin about the lack of action by the Minnesota state legislature on firearm restrictions. An omnibus firearms package passed 34-33 through the narrowly DFL-held Minnesota Senate. However, the bill — which contained safe storage definitions, a binary trigger ban re-do and bans on future assault weapon sales, high-capacity magazines and ghost guns — was not allowed to come forward for a vote in the House of Representatives by Speaker Lisa Demuth before the legislature’s mandatory adjournment. Purnell said that another factor that hindered the bill’s advancement in the House was a portrayal that the omnibus bill contained extreme proposals. He said, “The nuances of the provisions — not even the nuances, the general nature of the provisions, I think, got lost. These are not novel or untested laws.”
