Prof. Francis Shen Interviewed by MS NOW about Holding ChatGPT Criminally Liable in Florida School Shooting Case

Professor Francis Shen, Solly Robins Distinguished Research Fellow and professor of law, was interviewed live on the air by MS NOW host Chris Jansing to discuss the decision of the Florida State Attorney General James Uthmeier’s decision to launch a criminal investigation into OpenAI about ChatGPT’s role in providing information to Phoenix Ikner, who allegedly engaged in a tragic mass shooting at Florida State University last year. Regarding the attorney general’s decision, Prof. Shen said, “To actually accomplish this is difficult, and the two things he’s got to do is look at the mental state of the individuals, the makers, the managers there, and the owners of Chat GPT, but then also the causation. What role did this engagement between the shooter and ChatGPT actually play in the eventual outcome?” Prof. Shen is an expert at the intersection of AI and criminal law and taught Minnesota Law's first Law & AI course.
