Prof. Linus Chan Interviewed by The Guardian About Continued Immigrant Deportations

Professor Linus Chan was interviewed by The Guardian about the Trump administration’s continued efforts of mass deportations of illegal immigrants. While there has been a shift in tone with the removal of Kristi Noem, former DHS secretary, and Greg Bovino border patrol commander, deportations continue. The biggest bottleneck that the administration faces in its attempt to keep ratcheting up interior deportations is a lack of immigration judges to deal with the backlog of nearly four million cases. But according to Prof. Chan, the White House doesn’t seem interested in the backlog noting the administration fired 100 immigration judges last year, then brought in military lawyers to temporarily fill gaps. Instead, Prof. Chan said, the Trump administration appears poised to use the looming threat of its growing detention capacity to intimidate more people into “self-deporting.” He said, “They look at the four million case backlog, and they don’t care. They recognize they have the ability to detain, and they’ll use that to kick everybody out.”
