Prof. Richard Painter Quoted in Star Tribune Op-Ed About Departures From U.S. Attorney’s Office
Professor Richard Painter, S. Walter Richey Professor of Corporate Law, was quoted in a Minnesota Star Tribune op-ed discussing recent announcements that 14 lawyers have resigned or intend to resign from the Minnesota U.S. Attorney’s Office. Concern is high that the remaining attorneys are now overwhelmed by the number of cases they have had to handle because of the White House’s widespread immigration sweeps in Minnesota and the office being forced to shift its limited resources from other priorities. Regarding the attorney resignations, Prof. Painter praised the departing attorneys’ willingness to stand on principle. He said, “I think they’ve done the right thing. They’ve stepped out, they’ve said no and that’s what a lawyer needs to do when they’re being asked to do things that violate their conscience.”
