Prof. Linus Chan Interviewed by Sahan Journal and MPR About Detainees Left Stranded at Far-Off Detention Facilities
Professor Linus Chan, James H. Binger Clinical Professor of Law, was interviewed by the Sahan Journal about ICE detainees who are left stranded outside detention facilities after their release. Many successful court challenges have compelled the government to release detainees, but that has left an increasing number of Minnesotans stranded outside detention facilities far from home. Attorneys say that in some cases, ICE has refused to return identification cards or work permits to those released from detention. In addition, tracking people arrested by ICE isn’t easy. Some detainees are transferred out of state within hours of their arrest, before they can contact an attorney. Prof. Chan said, “There’s a part of me that wonders, given the speed of the transportation to Texas, I’m not even sure that they know who that person is before they put them on a plane.”
