Prof. Fionnuala Ní Aoláin Interviewed by Irish RTE Radio 1 About ICE Shooting

Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, Regents Professor and Robina Chair in Law, Public Policy, and Society, was interviewed by RTE Radio 1 in Ireland about the ICE shooting in Minneapolis. In the aftermath of the shooting, Prof. Ní Aoláin was asked about what ICE is doing across the country. She said, “There’s a reasonable place for law enforcement to address immigration issues; no one would contend that there’s no role in that. But of course, that has to be constrained by law. It has to be reasonable, it has to be proportional, and it can’t actually endanger people more than any reasonable law enforcement activity. What we’re seeing here is something quite different. We’re seeing ICE as a kind of third force, an unaccountable force, a force that operates at the behest of a trenchant loyalist to the president, and again, that’s pretty inconsistent with democracy and the way we understand law enforcement. So I think that’s deeply worrying.” Listen to the interview.
