Prof. Fionnuala Ní Aoláin Quoted by Irish Times About Greater Transparency Needed by Republic of Ireland Government

Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin was quoted in Common Ground by the Irish Times about the Republic of Ireland not investigating killings during the conflict, known as The Troubles, in Northern Ireland, since the 1998 Belfast Agreement that ended the conflict. In a recent conference organized by Truth Recovery Process, the Irish government needs to do the right thing and start dealing with the past in Northern Ireland, including a South African-style truth and reconciliation system. Prof. Ní Aoláin told the conference that successive Irish governments since 1998 are worthy of serious criticism for failing to investigate killings during the conflict in Northern Ireland. She said, “There’s been not just hesitancy, but unwillingness and foot dragging at an extraordinary rate to address the same kind of pertinent questions we’ve been asking in Northern Ireland since the early 1980s.”
