Prof. Jill Hasday Interviewed on MPR News about Presidential Power to Deploy Troops Domestically
Professor Jill Hasday, Distinguished McKnight University Professor and Centennial Professor in Law, was interviewed on MPR News about presidential powers and President Trump’s authority to deploy troops domestically. When asked about the legal precedent of a president taking such measures, Hasday replied, “The classic statute that presidents have relied on when using federal troops, which includes federalized National Guards, is something called the Insurrection Act. The Insurrection Act authorizes the president to deploy federal troops to quell domestic violence, insurrections, and rebellions against U.S. authority.”
