Prof. Richard Painter Interviewed by WCCO News About Legality of Sending National Guard to Cities
Professor Richard Painter, S. Walter Richey Professor of Corporate Law, was interviewed by WCCO News about the legality of the Trump administration attempting to send National Guard troops to cities for law enforcement purposes. Prof. Painter said, “National guard troops under the command of the governor of a state can perform law enforcement duties within that state. It would be a violation of federal law for National Guard troops under the command of the president of the United States, sent in by President Trump, to perform law enforcement functions in Minneapolis. There are very few exceptions that would allow federal troops to be deployed for domestic law enforcement purposes.” Watch the interview.
