Prof. Linus Chan Quoted in Sahan Journal About Detained Undocumented Immigrants Denied Bond
Professor Linus Chan, James H. Binger Clinical Professor of Law, was quoted in the Sahan Journal about undocumented immigrants in Minnesota with no criminal histories facing prolonged detentions in the face of harsh new federal guidelines. Since a July 8 memo from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ordered officials to hold undocumented immigrants in detention until their removal cases were resolved, judges and federal officials have denied bond to many undocumented immigrants in detention who probably would have been granted release. Prof. Chan said, “This has never been the practice for over 30-some odd years. It has always been understood — up until this summer — that those folks are eligible to ask for bond.”
