Prof. Alan Rozenshtein Quoted by Associated Press About Ongoing TikTok Ban Pause
Professor Alan Rozenshtein was quoted by the Associated Press about the 75-day reprieve Donald Trump gave to TikTok after the app was to be banned in January after the deadline passed for it to be sold by ByteDance, its China-based parent company. A law enacted last year in Congress and upheld unanimously by the Supreme Court said the ban was necessary for national security. TikTok continues to function with Apple, Google, and Oracle having been persuaded to continue to offer and support the app, on the promise that Trump’s Justice Department would not use the law to seek potentially steep fines against them. According to Prof. Rozenshtein, Trump’s actions so far violate the law. He said, “The law does not permit the sort of ‘extension’ that Donald Trump has announced.” But he acknowledged a court challenge or other pushback is unlikely.
