Prof. Richard Painter Interviewed by KARE 11 News About Feeding Our Future Contributing to Public Mistrust

Professor Richard Painter, S. Walter Richey Professor of Corporate Law, was interviewed by KARE 11 News about how the Feeding Our Future fraud case has contributed to the public’s mistrust of nonprofit organizations that rely on tax dollars. More than 20 defendants are awaiting trial after a jury last week found two of the major players guilty on all counts. Prof. Painter said he expects more convictions in the future. He said, “A massive fraud of this scale, hundreds of millions of dollars, cannot be accomplished without the complicity of a lot of people.” He said cases like these contribute to the public’s mistrust of nonprofit organizations that rely on tax dollars. He added, “There were red flags. The Minnesota Department of Education suspected that something was wrong and did not want to disperse funds to Feeding Our Future, and yet Feeding Our Future was able to persuade a judge that the funds should be dispensed anyway.”
