Visiting Prof. Jorge Contreras Publishes “True Law” in the Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

Visiting Professor Jorge Contreras’s newest article, “True Law as Genre: Narrative Nonfiction and the Law,” is now published in the Texas A&M Journal of Property Law. The article, which was written as part of the Journal’s 2023 annual symposium that focused on Prof. Contreras's book The Genome Defense — Inside the Epic Legal Battle to Determine Who Owns Your DNA, places the book within the larger context of “True Law” (as opposed to True Crime) narrative works. It asks whether True Law constitutes a recognizable literary genre and, if so, whether it should form a greater part of the law and literature canon. An Appendix contains a list of 52 True Law books, including Class Action, which concerns the landmark sexual harassment and employment discrimination class action lawsuit Jensen v. Eveleth Taconite Co., the events of which took place in northern Minnesota’s Iron Range.
