Video Available: Chief Justice Natalie Hudson '82 Delivers Minnesota Law's 10th Annual MLK Convocation
Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Natalie E. Hudson '82 provided the keynote address for the 10th MLK Convocation in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Realizing Dr. King's Dream: The Role of Justice and Public Service in Advancing Equality and Access,” on Friday, February 14. Dean William McGeveran, William S. Pattee Professor of Law, provided opening remarks. Professor Christopher Roberts, Joseph & Edith Wargo Research Scholar, and Vance Opperman Research Scholar, moderated the conversation with Chief Justice Hudson. Questions from the audience were submitted in advance. Chief Justice Hudson focused on the obligation of lawyers and courts to ensure equal access to justice while finding inspiration from Dr. King's words: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"
Hudson and Roberts spoke about a wide range of topics related to Dr. King's journey. She also shared how her experience working for a legal aide on housing issues after law school inspired her toward a career in service to others and encouraged students to find their passion, noting that a career the legal profession is a privilege.
Natalie E. Hudson was appointed Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court by Governor Tim Walz on Oct. 2, 2023. She first joined the Supreme Court on Oct. 26, 2015, by appointment of Governor Mark Dayton. She was elected Associate Justice in 2016 and 2022 and was re-elected as Chief Justice in 2024. Her current term as Chief Justice expires in Jan. 2031.
