Prof. JaneAnne Murray Quoted in Dallas Morning News About Three Clemency Clinic Clients who Received Biden Commutations
The Dallas Morning News, which previously profiled commutation recipients of clients of Minnesota Law's Clemency Project Clinic, has profiled three clinic clients who received commutations from President Biden in January 2025. The three were women who had been sentenced from a notoriously punitive district in Texas. Professor Jane Anne Murray who directs the clinic told the Dallas Morning News, “[The women] are exemplary prisoners who have made the most of everything on offer in the prison . . . [a]nd they are ready to engage in the world productively.” The article notes that Murray and her students handled the women’s clemency petitions pro bono and traveled to meet with them in Carswell, Texas, where they were incarcerated. Murray sees similarities in the three cases. She said, “[a]ll of these clients were serving excessive sentences that devastated their lives and the lives of their families.” Murray said the clinic's clemency work is not done, "We will continue to represent similarly situated prisoners and seek to redress the systemic inequities driving their disproportionate sentences."
