Prof. Alan Rozenshtein Quoted in Business Insider About the Possibility of the U.S. Government Partially Running TikTok

Professor Alan Rozenshtein was quoted in Business Insider about the possibility of search engine startup Perplexity AI’s proposal to merge TikTok’s U.S. business with its own by offering the U.S. government half of the new entity. Legal analysts say that for a sale to the government to work, dealmakers would need to set up editorial guardrails to prevent the U.S. from encroaching on its users’ First Amendment rights. But TikTok’s content moderation, such as removing videos that violate its policies could create legal challenges from the app’s users. Prof. Rozenshtein said, “What would be necessary, though I’m not sure it would be sufficient, is an extremely strict separation between the government and this new TikTok entity, especially when it comes to anything editorial.”
