Prof. Daniel Schwarcz Quoted in Washington Post Opinion Column About Natural Disasters Affecting Insurance Model
Professor Daniel Schwarcz was quoted in an opinion piece in the Washington Post about how, in light of the disastrous fires around Los Angeles, the model for insurance cannot keep pace with the mounting costs of structures being damaged or destroyed. The column said that “Last year, there were 27 severe weather-related events in the United States that caused $1billion or more in damages ... Most American homes are not build to withstand disasters. And the insurance market isn’t prepared, either.” Prof. Schwarcz said, “Our insurance model is increasingly untenable. Our model needs to change.”
