Prof. Linus Chan Interviewed on MPR About Status of Undocumented Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities After Trump Takes Office

Professor Linus Chan, James H. Binger Clinical Professor of Law, was interviewed on Minnesota Public Radio about whether undocumented immigrants living in sanctuary cities have an increased chance of being deported after Donald Trump takes office. Prof. Chan said that some cities, including Minneapolis, passed ordinances prohibiting city officials and law enforcement from asking about or investigating a person’s legal status. He said it was meant to prevent local resources from being used to carry out immigration enforcement, which is a federal matter. During his first term, Trump tried to withhold federal funding from cities with these ordinances, but his order ultimately was blocked. The takeaway, Prof.Chan said, is: “Local and state officials will continue to have a tremendous amount of discretion about whether and how much they want to have their resources to be used for immigration enforcement.” Listen to the full interview.
